The danger of mixing law and religion, in two Alabama bills

We reap bitter fruit when lawmakers cross-pollinate religion and law.

It’s not just a question of elevating one belief over others. The law at its best gives fair treatment to competing interests and keeps them on the same path through the world. When one version of what lies beyond this reality gets into the law, the people clinging to that vision enjoy a privilege over any other need or desire in the broader community.

Two bills pending before the Alabama Legislature put particular beliefs on a pedestal. And in the process, they could subject public education and the health of our children to the schemes of zealots.

That anti-transgender law is even worse than you think

The Alabama Legislature rushed a bill to Gov. Kay Ivey last week. It was so important that House Republicans limited debate on the measure to 10 minutes on Wednesday. It was so urgent that Ivey signed it on Thursday.

You would hope legislation passed so swiftly would address a major problem in the state. Like gun violence. The rural health crisis. Or the ongoing inequities in Alabama’s public schools.

Alabama as a rage room

You probably know what a rage room is. People fork over cash and spend time destroying household items like dishes and furniture cabinets.

They’re marketed as stress relief. But getting violent isn’t a path toward tranquility. It just encourages you to be violent.

Smash a plate or a teacup or a TV as much as you want. It might feel like you’ve released something. But that’s not calm. It’s a fleeting sense of power, easily confused with catharsis.

Doesn’t Shelby County have actual problems to address?

If someone handed you sheets of Census data on Shelby County, it wouldn’t take long to see how fast it’s growing.

The population jumped 14% between 2010 and 2020. That’s a number most governments would throw an Animal House-type celebration over. But in Shelby, it represented a fall from the 36% growth of the decade before.

I doubt anyone in Columbiana will complain, though. Growth means a healthy economy; a health economy means an expanding tax base. The median household income in Shelby is $98,000 a year, way higher than the state level of $60,000. Educational attainment is more than double Alabama’s overall rate. Unemployment and poverty are both low.

The great Goat Hill stampede of 2024

The Alabama Legislature crammed 40% of this year’s session into February.

That’s light speed for the body. At this rate, lawmakers could finish the session in mid- to late April, over a month before the state Constitution would require them to depart.

You might approve. The less time the legislature sits, the less time they have to pass bad laws. In recent years, the Republican supermajority has turned legislative sessions into bonfires of civil rights and voting access. If it could stop our lawmakers from throwing other freedoms into the flames, I’d end the sacrificial ritual early.

Alabama’s low workforce participation rate is real. Legislators may not like the solutions.

Alabama politicians chase so many imaginary problems that it’s worth noting when they dialogue with reality.

For example, the recent creation by Gov. Kay Ivey and state legislators of a commission to study the state’s chronically low workforce participation rate.

  It’s a real problem.
